Manaus and Exiting the Amazon

````We spent two days in Manaus, which is as far as a cruise boat can go on the Amazon. We were there on Jan 13 and 14. We then went to the town of Parintins where we saw a show setting up a Mardi Gras like celebration. We had local rum and lime in a drink. Today we are just leaving Alter do Chao, a beautiful beach near the mouth of the Amazon. We bought two dried piranha fish. There mouth of teeth are scary.``````````````````````````````
Boca da Valeria
We just left the remote village of Boca da Valeria. We saw pet monkeys, capobara, crocodiles..
the cruise line supports a school in this village. The villagers have small wood boats with little engines with straight shafts that look like weedeaters. There are pink dolphins that jump in the shallow waters of the river.
Macapa and Santarem
We arrived at the mouth of the Amazon on Jan 10 and visited Macapa. On Jan 11 we reached the small town of Santarem. There the blue waters of a tributary met the muddy Amazon water and half of the river was blue and the other side muddy brown. Today we have arrived
in Boca de Valeria where we will visit a school. It rains frequently and the temperature is
90 today. I hear it is cold there
Barbados and Devils Island
On Jan 6 we had a stop in Barbados and then we visited the very tropical
island of Devils Island in French Guyana on Jan 8. There were monkeys and weird
rodents called agouti which are like guinea pigs.
